Sisyphus and The Rock
A downloadable game for Windows
Submission for GameMakers Toolkit GameJam 2023.
The theme was "Roles Reversed". In this game it's not the mythical Sisyphus that pushes the rock to the top of a mountain, but rather the rock that is tasked to push Sisyphus.
The game is meant to be a Sisyphean task, much akin to "rage games" like 'Getting Over It' and 'Only Up'
Controls:
Up - Accelerate in the direction you are looking
Down - Brake
Left/Right- Turn Camera
Space - Boost
R - Restart
Esc - Quit
Special thanks to Bart Hesselman for creating the model for Sisyphus!
Lastly a quote from Bennett Foddy that captures our mindset during the development:
"A funny thing happened to me as I was building this mountain. I’d have an idea for a new obstacle, and I’d build it- test it- and it would usually turn out to be unreasonably hard… but I couldn’t bring myself to make it easier. It already felt like my inability to get past a new obstacle was my fault as a player, rather than as a builder. Imaginary mountains build themselves from our efforts to climb them, and it’s our repeated attempts to reach the summit that turns those mountains into something real."
